Banda Aceh (Aentenews) – A number of researchers from Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand and host Indonesia made use of marine environment and coastal areas in Sabang Island in the Indonesia’s Westernmost Province of Aceh for the remote sensing studies in effort to strengthen protection in facing the climate change problems.
The researhers talked on the so-called field program “UTM-PORSEC-USK 2026” on Wednesday (Sept.9) at the Pade Dive Resort at Sabang island under the theme “Capacity Building on Ocean Remote Sensing Towards Climate Resilience”.
Several other figures attending the marine research studies included Dr. Stefano Vignudelli from the Italian national reserch agency of CNR, Associate Dr. Nurul Hazrina binti Idris (Malaysia), Dr. Van Duong Nguyen from the National Research Vietnam-VAST, Associate Dr. Haekal Azief Harridhi Ph.D, dean of Maritime and Fisheries Faculty of USK and Sofyatuddin Karina M.Sc (USK).
Meanwhile, deputy of Sabang Mayor Suradji Junus hailed the coming of reseachers, teachers, University students and other participants from different countries to Sabang.
“We are very happy and honoured that Sabang has been chosen as one of locations for the “UTM-PORSEC-USK 2026” meeting”, Suradji said.
He also said, theme for the researchers meeting was very relevant with condition of Sabang as the island city, where marine and coastal areas have become important point for the people’s living and supports the fisheries, tourism, biodiversity and the city development.
“For Sabang, marine is not only part of geographic condition, but it is also an important part for identity and for our daily life as well.
The coastal and our environment supported the living of community, fisheries, tourism, biodiversity and city development,” he cited.
“Technology should also be supported by knowledge, qualified human resources as well as a tight collaboration. “Thus, we highly appreciate the collboration between Unsyiah state-run univerity in Aceh and the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia and PORSEC,” Suradji said.
“Marine has connected all of us. Challenge such as climate change and the process of marine resouces sustainability cannot be handled by merely an institution and even by a single country. Therefore, knowledge, education, technology as well as partnership are very important to find the solution,” he noted.
Aceh province shares borders with three countries namely Malaysia, Thailand and India (through Andaman and Nicobar Islands. //Aentenews by Bustanuddin.
